Some frequently asked questions

  • Counselling and psychotherapy are terms that are often used interchangeably. Psychotherapists have usually had longer and more intensive training than counsellors. Psychotherapist will focus more on long-term issues and growth rather than short-term goals.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy aims to increase awareness of your ‘inner world’ and the influence it holds over your self-esteem and relationships, both from the past and the present.

Working with the arts in psychotherapy illuminates and gains access to the unconscious in a way that talking therapy cannot. It gets beneath the surface and offers powerful and profund insights that are often out of conscious awareness. Making art can also helps to calm the mind and be particularly good for helping clients who overthink and find it difficult to access their feelings.

  • Every therapy session is different because every client is different.

  • Not at all. If you come to me for therapy, we work in a way that feels comfortable for you. I am trained in different modalities so that I have a bigger toolbox to help you, not to put you into a box and make you do something that doesn’t feel right for you.

  • An initial meeting is usually 30-minutes on zoom. It is an opportunity for you to get a sense of me and for me to learn more about what you’re looking for. I will ask questions about you, your family and what brings you to therapy. You may also want to ask me questions.

For therapy to be effective, we need to be the right ‘fit’ and you need to feel comfortable with me. That means you may need to meet several therapists before you find the one who feels right for you. That can feel challenging and confusing when you’re already feeling vulnerable. That is why I offer a no obligation, no fee session.

  • Currently I offer in-person psycotherapy in Haggerston, Islington and Tufnell Park. I also offer sessions on Zoom for international clients or people who are unable to get to in-person sessions.

  • Psychotherapy sessions are usually once week, at the same time and place.

We can move between meeting in person and online if you work on rota, or travel for work. I try to remain as flexible as my diary allows.

Sometimes I may suggest that we do longer sessions if there is a particular issue that needs more space and time to explore.

  • I understand that sometimes it’s difficult to make the same time every week so if you need to change the time of your session, I will need at least 24 hour’s notice. I cannot always promise to accommodate another time, but I will do my best.

Cancellations made with less than 24 hour’s notice will be charged at the full price.

In the unlikely event that I need to change or cancel a session, I will provide you with as much notice as possible.

  • Please inform me wherever possible. Unfortunately, I cannot extend sessions past your agreed session time, as that is likely allocated to another client.

  • I appreciate that people come to therapy seeking change, and that predicting a timeframe can offer a sense of control and hope, but unfortunately it is not possible to give you a specific timeframe.

We will continue to review your needs as therapy progresses, and my intention is to make myself redundant so that you no longer need therapy. If you are not experiencing change, I will be questioning what I am doing and how I can better meet your needs.

  • You are of course, free to end psychotherapy at any time. I do however suggest that we take some time to reflect on the work that has happened. The number of sessions we agree on for ending will differ, according to individual needs and how long you have been in therapy. Additionally, ending psychotherapy may bring up memories of previous endings in your life and this may provide an opportunity to end in a positive way.

  • My fees start at £95 per session depending on your financial situation. I recognise this can be expensive for many people and will always reserve some of my time for low-cost work. However, there is often a waiting list for these slots. If money is a problem, please get in touch and we can discuss your options.

Sometimes I may recommend a series of longer sessions when there is a particular issue that may need working through. Occasionally it may feel right to have two sessions a week for a short period of time.

I ask clients to pay for a block of 4 sessions up front and accept payment by cash or by bank transfer. If paying for a block of work is difficult, please let me know and we can discuss options.

  • Working with Louise was really helpful in navigating interpersonal difficulties, and for addressing opinions I had about myself. I felt I had a safe space with Louise and could be honest about things that we disagreed on. I loved the art component of the therapy especially. It really opened up a dialogue about feelings, thoughts and situations that I may not have known how to talk about about otherwise.
